In other words, Doctor Who #1 is a reboot of the series from Titan Comics, and it does the terrible modern comic thing of starting a new series that directly follows on from the previous one, and that readers don’t notice. It features plot points and story beats that reference previous events that may or may not have happened. of.
Of course, Doctor Who itself has a long history and continuity, but that can be malleable at times. It seems a bit cheeky to launch a number one to attract new readers, even though it’s essentially a direct continuation of the previous story.
This is a really good manga, so this is my complaint out of the way. In it, the Thirteenth Doctor and Tenth Doctor’s team’s shenanigans spark a major change across time, leading to the She-Devils taking control of the surface world and enslaving Earth’s humanity.
Screenwriter Jody Houser does an excellent job capturing the voices and mannerisms of all the characters, including some very surprising but welcome additions to the cast. We’ve seen them before in their Alt-Earth incarnations, so it’s great to catch up with them again. Even if they aren’t exactly like the characters we know and love.
Roberta Ingranata’s art is also a great fit for this comic, with a cartoonish semblance that doesn’t stray into the uncanny valley or over-referenced territory that can be the bane of licensed comics.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this issue and managed to find an issue with a variant cover. That’s why in the image above, you can see “Ya Boy” (oh no, I’ll never do that again) holding a gorgeous sketch version of Momoko’s comic book. Yes, that’s where I found myself holding the Doctor Who #1 comic and thanking the excellent Southampton Comics for keeping it in stock at a surprisingly affordable price.
