Chromatic Fantasy is this anachronistic fantasy romance between two transdandy highwaymen is a timeless definition. Certainly, a life of crime is better than a real job that you can never get anyway. The only thing that can ruin that moment is the demons who made a deal with them coming to collect. The atmosphere is pure white. Attitude, everything. Ha captures the unfortunate lethargy of fitting, draped with harlequin silk, thieves, domino masks and slick smiles. aok
Food School is a solid part of graphic medicine about the experiences of non-binary people in outpatient programs for eating disorder recovery. Jade Armstrong does an incredible job of documenting science and telling the story of olive in a real heart. It is a funny cartoon, a ridiculous cartoon atmosphere, a volcanic defecation movement, it is the second of the human and health issues first. It’s more realistic than real. aok
Good people troubles ⸺ Animals can talk. The courts are cooked to begin with, but both Fox and Hound live on pages where you are not written in their books. How much dishonest BS is someone to take before it breaks? Noel Cleger intervenes to protect him. aok
Laura Dean continues to break with me. With Rosemary Valero O’Connell’s gorgeous, soft artwork and resonating dialogue from Tanaka Mariko, Laura Dean is a beautiful story that becomes strange. ⸺aks
In Sunbeam, this is the story of a talented burnout and a secret princess. Has the working class, the spaceship restoration crew (the art in this cartoon is sublime) illegally sneaked through the boundaries of space to be with the Queen of the Heart? You mean they’re going to do that. A surreal mix of architecture, adventure and star-crossing lovers. Tilly Walden is a legend, and here’s why. aok
Body Portraits⸺ Julie Delport’s ability to combine the simple and complexes is a critical feature of her work. With a gentle, organized visual style, she promises to explore the depths of the themes with sincere complexity. In her body portrait, Delport geneically shares her ongoing journey with the discovery of trauma, healing, identity, and authentic desires. ⸺aks
Ash’s cabin was delivered by Prince and Dressmaker Eisner Award-winning creator Jen Wang in 2024 with his most emotional work. Ash’s cabin explores sadness, identity, and communication with nature. It’s a fierce and kind story about how far someone goes to discover who they are, especially in the wake of a tragedy. ⸺ got it
Putty pygmalion In fact, the real horror movie aspect of this comic is that you want to go with you and have a terrible selfish roommate who doesn’t go anywhere else. What sets the comic the most is the dollhouse room where the scenes are all filmed, with characters hand drawn and placed in cel-animated panels. aok
Roaming is a surprising mature, subtle, fun, effortless graphic novel, and all the awards and a bit of praise from Gillian and Tanaka Mariko. When two friends are on a bit of a NYC exploration trip, unexpectedly transforming into a three-friend trip, there are unlikely, mismatched romance flowers. Hold your longing and hands and stay for a grand, drastic minimalist page layout. aok
Sad girl space lizard I do. lesbian romance friends from Iggy Craig’s enemies are suddenly in charge of the injured ACE pilot and the screw pilot of backup, responsible for artistic burnout, unable to use the dominant hand, and not find bliss that will return to the medium that broke you. aok (intervening OK)
Space Battle Lunchtime is a full age version of the previous recommendations, Sad Girl Space Lizard. And yes, at all ages, it means that adults will love Natalie Reese’s trilogy of graphic novels. In a culinary competition that fears life for fame and glory, the OGN hero can find love in a hopeless place. ⸺ got it
Soft comics, half-diary, toxic Yuri modernization of the tale of a pre-Dracula Irish lesbian vampire. Jane Mai’s comics are very indie. It’s filled with amazingly serious moments of sad, cute, personal quest and revelation. It looks simple, emotionally resonating, and gourmet emo. aok
Stone Fruit is this 2021 debut graphic novel, and the graphic novel by Lee Lai, Bron and Ray is a strange couple who each have unresolved issues to work with their own families. But when they split up from one another, they both have to face their baggage…and themselves. It’s no wonder this excellent comic has received so many acclaim since its publication, as it is beautifully rendered and emotionally inspiring. ajk
Thief⸺It’s okay, they meet at the party. She hid in the closet and stole theft. So let’s do a lot of dates. what. It was done. probably. go. It’s wrong. Lucy Brillon knocks it out of the park. aok
The History of Trans: Ancient to the Present⸺In this non-fiction graphic novel by Alex L. Combs and Andrew Eekett, the creator explores the history of the trans people. Starting in ancient Egypt and running all the way to this day, this informative and interesting book is a powerful reminder that certain executive orders can be more complicated than they believe in ignorant people. ajk
Witch⸺Ariel Reese’s debut work and web comic Witchy are everything you want from a fantasy book, but rarely get it: a focus on interesting power systems (the strength of magic based on hair), non-European culture (in this case Southeast Asian culture), and a love and understanding of the maintenance of cultural practice. Embarrassing, strange, repentant, anti-imperialist, and excellent portrayal. Currently, only two books are published, so I’m hooked, breathing in and waiting. ⸺ebh
