The surgery for Laser Eye, the debut graphic novel by cartoonist Walker Tate, will be announced by Fantagraphics Books in August this year.
Laser eye surgery uses vision-vision as a starting point for exploring themes in visual, visual, visual, delusional, and cartoon formats (which in itself is clearly a visual medium). As shown on the preview page below, Tate’s new book is a spare, interesting cartoon, using visuals to tell stories about vision and perception. It begins to a mystery – the hero finds a mysterious ad for an honorable ophthalmological surgery – and we go from there.
This is the cover of the book…
After preview text from the publisher list, you can find these 12 pages below… Enjoy!
A nameless man stumbles over a flyer directing him to a suspicious medical facility that promises to “correct” his eyesight. After he undergoes surgery, optical defects begin to appear, along with a whole new set of concerns. The impressive and easily worried man begins to suspect that he has received far more than he paid.
Laser Eye Surgery is the first graphic novel by New York cartoonist Walker Tate. Far from the objective (or accurate) depiction of popular vision correction procedures, this is a singular, biased field of vision, paranoia, and cartoon form. As human vision continues to change in unexpected ways, he jumps over the path of confusion and intrigue, no longer sure what to trust. Scams and weaknesses seem to be everywhere. Space fraud is out of sight. Is the perceived danger really exists or is it simply thought, which is worse? Frivolous, withholding, horrifying moisture-soaked laser eye surgery is a counterindication about comically unstable perception and its trapping.
And here’s the preview… enjoy!
