Thabiso Mabanna (Nguniverse Studios) and artist Katlego Motaung. See what Theron had to say about the series after the jump.
Inbokodo #1
Theron said: “When Thabo and Thabiso of Nguniverse Studios first brought this idea to us, we were excited about the epic scope and emotional scope of this world they had created around an incredibly powerful African female warrior. When we saw the same potential in Thabo and Thabiso’s unique and special vision, we knew we had found the perfect home at Dark Horse. We couldn’t have asked for better creative partners than Thabo and Thabiso for our first foray, and we can’t wait for the world to meet the indomitable warrior women of Imbokodo.”
Like Theron, Thabo Ramesh is an award-winning South African actor and filmmaker who founded Nguniverse with Mabanna (a corporate finance strategist) in 2020, marking Imbokodo’s first foray into comics. (Nevertheless, Theron has previously starred in Atomic Blonde, The Old Guard, its long-delayed sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and The Boys. ) When the comic was announced in June, the creators frankly said they wanted to make it into a movie. Developing the series into a cinematic universe, Secret Menu confirmed in a press release that it will be directing a “scripted adaptation.”
“Imbokodo,” which debuts on November 20, follows the titular female warriors of the fictional empire of Monomotapa, particularly an unnamed young recruit after an enemy nation kidnaps a number of girls (including her younger sister) from their homes. Issues 2-4 will follow on February 12th, April 9th, and June 4th, respectively, with paperbacks of the entire series scheduled to be released in bookstores on July 15th, 2025 and in comic shops the following day. The series is currently available for pre-order at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, TFAW, and all good comic/book retailers.
