Scholastic is a new take written by Captain Underpants: The First Epic Manga, series creator Dav Pilkey, featuring art by children’s cartoonist Motojiro (Time Warp, Battle Brave). The book, scheduled for release early next year, tells the story of an original 1997 book. In this book, two boys hosted the school principal as “the greatest superhero of all time.”

Pilky said: “It’s a great honor to render an illustration of Motojiro’s Captain Underpants illustration into a manga. His vibrant art has inspired me to dig deeper, write new dialogues, and even flesh out the story. I hope that a whole new level and exciting format will create a new generation of readers.”
Motojiro said, “When I was chosen to draw Captain Underpants, the words couldn’t express how excited I was. I had the opportunity to meet Dave Pilky in Japan and read his amazing, rethinked texts. It was a great experience to hear about his deep love and care.
This book will be released in digital, paperback and hardback on April 7, 2026 in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The first entry in the series since Captain Underpants in 2015, and the sensational saga of Sir Stinks-a-Lot is thrilled like a dog man spinoff (launched in 2016) and a full-color release. Scholastic’s recent foray into comics was released last year in a rethink of Osamu Tezuka’s Unico, Unico: Awakening (by Samuel Sattin and Gurihiru).
In the meantime, Pilky’s next book, Dog Man: Big Gym, will be released by Scholastic on November 11th, 2025.
