Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel are officially returning to comics in major ways thanks to Dynamite Entertainment and Disney’s 20th TV new partnership. This renewal is led by Eisner Award-winning Kelly Thompson, who has launched a bold new chapter for his beloved franchise and writes both the Interconnected Series.
Known for her rave reviews under titles such as Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Bird of Prey, and Deadpool, Thompson brings Sunnydale and Los Angeles a signature mix of heart, humor and action. The Buffy and Angel comics act as a companion series, giving longtime fans a fresh twist while also serving as a new jump-on point for readers to discover the universe for the first time. The book features a cover by superstar artist David Nakayama.
“Buffy was the first heroine to really resonate with me,” Thompson shared. “The blend of horror, fantasy and comedy, with flawed but noble hearts in the center, felt like it was made for me.
Editor Nate Cosby reeled in excitement, saying, “Kelly Thompson was the only name on my list, both Buffy and Angel. Her vision for these characters would blow fans away.”
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer television program documented Buffy’s high school days from 1997 to 2003, fighting vampires, demons, and Hermos itself. The spinoff in which Angel, Buffy’s Vampire navigates his own path to red in Los Angeles has also become a favorite series by television and cartoon fans.
“Buffy is one of the most iconic shows of the era,” says Nick Barcach, CEO and publisher of Dynamite. “The mix of horror, fantasy, humor and empowerment characters is perfect for the comics. I’m excited to bring both Buffy and Angel back to the page.”
Details about variant covers, release dates and additional creative team members will be revealed soon. Check out Dynamite’s channel and AIPT.
