A new Comic Book Trade Association was established by several UK publishers. The members of the group simply called Comic Book UK are made up of DC Thomson (Vino (Vino), Rebellion (2000 AD), Avery Hill (Spinning), David Fickling (Phoenix Comics), B7 Media (Pilgrims: Secrets and Lies), and Imaginative Entertainment (Fable Reading Platform). A key part of the economy, and “make the UK the best place in the world and create, publish and sell comics and graphic novels.”
Mark Fuller, Chief Executive Officer of the group, said, “Comics are one of the crown gems of the UK’s creative industry, and there is a huge, undeveloped possibility for further growth. We will become a global comic superpower for UK companies to grow and expand into new regions to provide inward investments from North America and inward investments to support the European comic industry. We will unlock this possibility.”
The three main objectives of Comic Book UK’s first year are to investigate and analyze “clear evidence of the economic value of the industry” for investors. Advise government policies to make the industry more attractive to international companies. And perhaps most locally, “play a constructive role in the debate on the regulation of generator AI, ensuring that the intellectual property value of British comic companies is maintained within a structure that supports innovation.”
Fuller also called on the president’s Prime Minister, Rachel Reeves, to provide tax cuts to smaller publishers. He said, “Just bringing one new monthly anthology comic to the market will create hundreds of paid committees for freelance creatives, providing a platform for developing new properties that can be exported to a vast global audience and licensed to other media. The gaming industry may encourage serious consideration of the possibility of expanding the relief of existing creative industries to cover comics in this fall budget.”
UK Minister of Creative Industry Sir Chris Bryant, with his edgy history from Punch to 2000 years of advertising, British comics and comics, entertains millions around the world as part of the £11 billion publishing sector, and praises it as innovative to support its innovative dietary supplement. We look forward to working with Comic Book UK while developing plans to further boost the growth-driven industry. ”
More members of the group will be announced at a later date. Membership is not available to individual freelancers, employees or students at the time of writing, but we hope that it will change as the official website is a declaration representing the interests of comic creators. Visit their website for more information in the meantime. Perhaps the launch of this group would encourage the creation of comparables in the US. This hasn’t happened since the Comic Magazine Association of America broke up in 2011, but in many cases, only time is known.
