As previously announced, DC KO: Boss Battle is an upcoming DC KO tie-in one-shot that sends DC’s greatest superheroes into the challenge of unexpected challengers from comics, horror, fantasy, and gaming. The high-octane one-shot, which will be released next month on February 4, is created by the creative team of writer Jeremy Adams, artists Ronan Cricket, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Kieran McCune, Pablo M. Culler, and Hi-Fi. Today, DC released preview pages for the highly anticipated tie-in issue.
The publisher describes this one-shot as follows:
In DC KO: Boss Battle, the heroes of the DC Universe are running out of time and don’t have enough Omega Energy to take part in the final battle. To stop Darkseid’s escalating threat, they must engage in a series of escalating boss battles across the multiverse, each more unpredictable than the last. Each encounter brings them closer to their limits, and failure to level up means guaranteed failure in the final DC KO contestant bracket.
As previously revealed, the DC superheroes will face off against icons including Sub-Zero (Netherrealm), Homelander, Red Sonja and Vampirella (Dynamite), Samantha Strong (IDW), and even New Line Cinema’s infamous horror doll Annabelle. After being teased by DC editor Chris Conroy last month, DC has officially revealed that Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Archie Comics) will also appear in this issue.
Writer Jeremy Adams expressed great excitement for the project:
“Patrick Horvath, along with Samantha Strong, has created an incredibly complex and frankly frightening character,” said Jeremy Adams. “We feel lucky to be able to bring the serial killer bear from IDW’s The Secret Tree up against the greatest criminal of our time, Lex Luthor, especially since Lex has no idea who he stumbled upon. Having written four animated films, I jumped at the chance to write more about the Netherrealm world, especially for the comics. These characters hold a dear place in my heart because of the opportunity I’ve had so far. You can interact with the entire MK universe.”
He added:
“DC KO: Boss Battle was a surprise to me,” Adams said. “I never expected that I would be writing Welcome to Greendale!” in DC Comics! A house of favorite teenage witches who volunteers to “help” Star Sapphire in a boss fight. This was a bright spot amidst all the chaos surrounding this issue. I found myself really enjoying my short time with Sabrina. And Homelander vs Superman! The biggest ahole in pop culture right now is fighting the big blue boy scout? here we go! My only regrets are that we didn’t have *more* pages to show their punches and kicks…and we didn’t show Superman telling Homelander to close the toilet mouth before launching into the sun!”
DC KO: Boss Battle #1 will arrive at participating comic shops and digital retailers on February 4th with a main cover by Jamal Campbell and cardstock variant covers by Jeff Spokes, Darick Robertson and Diego Rodriguez (featuring Homelander), Patrick Horvath (featuring Samantha Strong), Frank Cho and Sabine Rich (featuring Vampirella, Red Sonja, Sabrina the Teenage Witch), and Gleb Melnikov (AEW). variations of cameo appearances).
