Black Mask Studios will debut a new issue in the Calexit series at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2025. The benefits benefit families affected by the ongoing Ice Raid through the Alliance San Diego Immigration Relief Fund. Calexit: The Battle of San Onofre #1 is written by Matteo Pizzolo and drawn by Butch Mapa and will be available from Thursday, July 24th to Sunday, July 27th.
The Battle of San Onofre follows a group of radical friends with a Department of Homeland Security attack at work. Here’s the complete overview:
Zola Donato worked at Dunkin Donuts in Oceanside when Marine attacks joined the seaside resistance and urged them to fight against the newly declared independent California-based DHS occupation forces.
The comic is especially timely now, but was written last year before the wave of deportation under the Second Trump administration. Calexit has long placed fictional stories to work in the real world, through fundraising, campaign spotlights and more. Calexit: All systems raised funds for the San Diego Rapid Response Network in 2018, and character Emmy X became the face of that year’s “Get Out The Vote” campaign in California. Writer Pizzolo also contributes to shaping his royalty to become a “super pack of government,” with each issue of Calexit featuring interviews with real-life organizers, activists and local political candidates. The featured was successful in their primary election.
“With Calexit, I try my best to keep my dystopia optimistic and constructive. I focus on characters who struggle to do the right thing for each other in a crazy world,” Pizzolo said. “I wrote the story of this character origin last year. It’s heartbreaking to see real-world events unfold in such a rapid clip, reflecting the dark speculations of the comic.
During SDCC ’25, Black Mask will be able to purchase the entire Calexit series at booth #5536.
