Welcome to another edition of Fantastic Five. This week, the ultimate absolute universe reigns supreme, each of whom has grabbed the perfect ten. Let’s reach the book!

The Week’s Best Comics: August 7, 2025

#5: JSA #10

“JSA” #10 declares victory for the injustice association

Although it’s not a perfect problem compared to JSA#8, JSA#10 is still a fun read. The cast of characters depicting this storyline is well chosen, with each hero playing an important role in the story. Similarly, despite some members still feeling out of place within the team like Scandal Savage, the group of villains that make up the current iteration of the Injustice Society has their own fun interactions. Overall, JSA #10 is a big issue to address in a fun, action-packed storyline that includes DC’s oldest team.

#4: EC Cruel Universe 2 #1

“Cruel Universe 2” #1 is socially conscious and interesting

Cruel Universe 2 #1 is a stunning return to one of 2024’s best anthology, offering a trio of deeply themed sci-fi stories that will challenge, entertain and provoke. With Top Tier creators bringing A Game and nods to the past in a reprint of EC comics, the issue reaffirms the “bold and socially conscious vision” of the series. It’s a manga that dares to say something, and it actually means it.

#3: Storm #11

“Storm” #11 escalates the Thunder War with fierce rage

The conclusion of the climactic Thunder War comes next month at Storm #12, and the book will then rotate in a new direction as the upcoming “Age of Revelation” dramatically reconstructs all X-Books. Starting in October, both Storm and Rogue will appear in the new series Rogue Storm. Rogue leads a team of Gateway, Iceman, Phantomex, Spiral and Warpass, trying to kill the storm before plunging the world into a new ice age. We are excited to see what the fate of the Storm will be at the end of the Thunder War, and how the decisions made during the Thunder War lead to an injustice storm.

#2: Absolute Green Lantern #5

“Absolute Green Lantern” #5 is the best water-cooled cartoon

More like the lost thing than traditional superhero storytelling, Absolute Green Lantern #5 is the best water cooler comic. Al Ewing’s journey to Cosmic Horror offers more questions than answers. Using carefully expressed dialogue and subversion of our expectations, Ewing creates a must-read and compelling story for media fans. Additionally, Jahnoy Lindsay’s artwork elevates the story with horror-inspired visuals and character designs. The creator’s work is a true feast for the eyes as the subsequent readings provide new details surrounding the story.

#1: Ultimate X-Men #18

“Ultimate X-Men” #18 sets the stage of chaos

The Ultimate X-Men #18 is a great issue offering powerful lore and gorgeous artwork. Momoko and Davisson attacked everything about this issue, creating some great emotional moments and teases for the future. As a longtime X-Men fan, I checked all the philosophical boxes, and as a critic and comic writer, I found out that there is the strongest storytelling on the shelf right now. I’m excited to see what comes with this series and the cast of its characters.
