Marvel Comics has announced that longtime Avengers writer Brian Michael Bendis will be returning to the series for the series’ 800th issue. He reunites with Ultimate Spider-Man artist Mark Bagley for a 14-page backstory that sees Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America (Steve Rogers) take on Hydra, where “they soon join even more teammates, past and present, in a thrilling showdown that embodies the team’s mission and influence!”

The comic will be Bendis’ first Marvel work since leaving his exclusive contract with DC in 2018. “It was a great experience to return to the pages of Marvel Comics,” Bendis said. “Reuniting with the Avengers on the occasion of their anniversary is doubly wonderful, because anniversary issues are a real celebration of our love for the characters and their legacy. I made my Avengers debut in Avengers #500 (2004), and I love the symmetry.”
He continued, “I had the pleasure of reuniting with my dear longtime Ultimate Spidey and Avengers collaborator Mark Bagley. It’s magical enough just to be reunited, but I’m excited to have him come out of retirement and do this story with me. It was an incredible gesture and he has already written a magical page. It was a great reunion for us and the characters. Thank you to everyone at Marvel for bringing me back on such an auspicious occasion.”
Bendis confirmed his full-time return to the Marvel Universe, concluding his statement with, “This is the first of a really special Marvel project that I will be a part of in the near future. Stay tuned…” Avengers #800 (#34 of the current volume) is set to conclude writer Jed McKay’s three-year run on January 3rd, and while Marvel has not announced any plans for the future of the comic beyond that at this time, Armageddon, Chip says. Zdarsky’s upcoming event series will reimagine Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in a manner similar to Bendis and David Finch’s 2004 crossover Avengers: Disassembled.
Meanwhile, issue 3 (of 12 issues) of Bendis’ latest creator-owned series, Powers 25, will be released by Dark Horse on November 19th.
