In February, DC announced that writer Matt Fraction and artist Jorge Zimenez will become the new creative team for the ongoing Batman series, following the conclusions of Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee’s H2SH storyline. Enveloping that story in September of August, we see the arrival of Fractions, Jimenez, Colorist Tomeumory and Letter Clayton Cowles Batman #1. Today DC has announced details about who the artist in question will be, and has announced the differences between special “blind” blind candidates for the issue.
First, the main cover of the Jimenez in this issue features a trade dress and a stylish corner box.
The complete list of Batman #1 variant cover artists is a column of true killer superstar artists, including past Batman artists and fractional collaborators. This is the cover you can show off right now:
Marc Silvestri and Arif Prianto (Order open)
Frank Cleet (Open an order)
Gabriele del Otto (Order open)
Julian Tortino Tedesco (Order open)
Andy Kubert (1:25 incentive)
David Aja (1:50 incentive)
“DC Showcase” Wrap Around Variant Cover Stanley “Artgerm” Lau (“DC Showcase” Wrap Around Variant, Retail Price $24.99)
Jim Lee and J. Scott Campbell will also offer an open variation of the order to this issue. This also comes with a foil logo cover and a blank sketch cover. Jiménez’s cover is also available in a trade dress as a $7.99 foil variant.
Each of the above is available in shiny foil only if you are lucky enough to pull it out from one of the newly announced “Blind As a Bat” variant cover blind bags. Variations of these polybugs sell for $9.99, so collecting them all is not a cheap effort.
If that’s not enough, you can also pick up a “huge size” 11″ x 17″ version with either the regular or foil version of the Jiménez main cover.
However, for both the gimmick and the price, the surest “blind as a bat” variations are what draw most attention. This is not the first time DC has made a cracked variation into a blind bag. In 2015 and 2016, we performed a variant line with Harley’s Little Black Book theme and Batman V Superman themes, respectively. Each of these variants was available in three different versions, usually black and white, and pencil only, randomly packed into blind bags. Some lucky buyers also found original art sketch covers in blind bags. There’s no word on whether that applies to the new Batman #1, but I don’t know what DC has on the sleeve.
There are many variant covers, including bagging, and Batman #1 is scheduled to be released in stores and digitally on Wednesday, September 3rd.
