One aspect of the first issue of Fantastic Four that readers will find impressive is the frenetic pace at which the story is approached. The inciting incident is set up before being largely abandoned in each subsequent chapter, throwing members of Marvel’s First Family into new concepts and conflicts as the issues progress.Even issues that introduce major FF villains tend to veer significantly into new areas of the story. Issue #5 introduces Doctor Doom before he kidnaps Sue in Chapter 1 (ensuring the surrender of the rest of the team) and sends the boys back in time to steal pirate…
After the first issue, it’s clear that Exceptional X-Men is a great teen mutant comic series. At the forefront of this is Kitty Pryde, who can’t help but support the children as she did back then. This teen drama follows “Exceptional X-Men #2” and will be highly relatable to teenagers and those who were bullied in high school. If it wasn’t already clear, this issue confirms that Kitty is the main character of this series. Issue #2 begins with Kitty working at Lulu Tavern, but quickly quits for a date. Author Eve L. Ewing puts Kitty at the root of the…
Silver Sprocket is one of the most exciting publishers of indie comics, and one of the coolest bookstores in San Francisco. Unfortunately, just being exciting and cool doesn’t necessarily pay for itself. After 15 years of publishing their award-winning comics, they started a fundraiser on their website. Rewards include monthly and annual subscriptions, tons of exclusive posters, signed books, and more. Why do we do fundraising? Well, the announcement says: To celebrate Silver Sprocket’s 15th year of publishing artist-driven, socially conscious comics that have ultimately won them an Eisner Award, multiple Ignaz Awards, and many other great achievements, we would…

After the events of Blood Hunt, Blade is left with a lot of baggage to deal with. Possessed by Varnae, he leads an army of vampires, but barely survives. Ryan North’s Fantastic Four series celebrates Halloween this week with Fantastic Four #26. Even if the cover wasn’t a special prize, this issue features a bleeding skull. A comic’s cover doesn’t necessarily represent the comic, but with Mister Fantastic and the Human Torch dealing with things like bleeding skulls and ghosts, Joshua Cassara’s cover represents a big part of the issue. It is no exaggeration to say that there are.Fantastic Four #26 begins with Mr. Fantastic wrapping up a magic detector and Johnny slurping candy. The rest of the family is out trick-or-treating, leaving the remaining two members of the…
