The Biden administration has finalized subsidies for TSMC, which will receive $6.6 billion in subsidies as part of an agreement to expand semiconductor production in the United States. TSMC will also receive an additional $5 billion in government financing to fund the expansion of its planned $65 billion three-factory complex in Arizona. According to Bloomberg, it is expected to receive at least $1 billion of the total by the end of the year, as it has already met certain requirements. In…
The latest Amazon Fire HD 8, updated last month and starting at $100, is a modest refresh, offering more RAM, a nominally upgraded camera and some new AI features. The general sales pitch, however, remains the same: You get a just-competent tablet for the essentials at a dirt-cheap (and often-discounted) price, and in exchange, Amazon gets to plant another appliance for its own apps and services in your home. Nothing about this update drastically changes that agreement, but after using the tablet for the past month (and after using older Fire tablets for years prior), it may be time to…
Elon Musk has amended his lawsuit against OpenAI to include additional antitrust claims against the company and to add Microsoft as a defendant. He also added his company xAI and Siobhan Gillis, a former OpenAI board member and mother of three, as plaintiffs. After dropping his state court case in June, he sued OpenAI and Altman again in federal court.Musk was one of OpenAI’s early backers, and one of his claims was that he was “betrayed by…

I know what you’re trying to say: “reMarkables is not an e-reader!” and I completely agree with that. It may have an e-paper display, but it’s definitely not a real e-book reader. I’m just a big idiot. That said, you can actually load DRM-free ePub files onto the slate using the company’s in-house transfer app. All reMarkables support this format, and you can also modify and highlight text that is transferred to cloud-based storage. If you’re elbow-deep in a textbook and need to take notes quickly, it makes plenty of sense to use one of these. Plus, if you’re taking…
