Two undersea communication cables in the Baltic Sea have been severed, and at least one appears to have been physically severed. CNN has received confirmation from a local telecommunications company that the cable between Lithuania and Sweden was cut on Sunday morning. The second cable is located approximately 60 to 65 miles from the first cable and routes communications between Finland and Germany. The cause of the outage has not yet been determined, but authorities suspect “intentional damage.”The outage follows a US warning in September about the increased risk of Russian “sabotage” of submarine cables.
