“Time is a flat circle, and I hate it.” That’s become my go-to refrain over the last few months as America slides ever further into a fascist hellscape (and everyone else in the world has to either live with that or gnaw their hand off to escape our implosion). It is both unnerving and oddly therapeutic to know we’re living through the same splendors and perils of other eras, and that human behavior is so predictable it basically repeats like a Spider-Man reboot every 80-ish years. That as progressive as we might feel right now, we are still slaves to…

For decades, featuring a cast of ordinary teenagers in a range of Archie titles – mildly comedic situations, was seen as a family-friendly, offensive, somewhat conservative tale fortresses. Debuting in 1941, Riverdale teenagers – Archie and his peers changed little in terms of style, tone and content. An example was the style of something like a car that demonstrates the passage of time. It is one of the few comic publishers that are reliable and “safe” for readers of all ages, but I have to say that Riverdale-based titles often felt rather dull. The 21st century finally brought about a…

Various crisis events are exciting in both form and function. The anthology features a one-shot style story with vividly authentic main characters, but it’s how Dennis Camp and Eric Zawatzki play with your expectations as they visually tell the story on the page. In the final issue, we saw blood slowly dip the groove. This week, various Crisis Event #3 will be followed by mirroring to help convey how different or similar the two groups of people are. Issue #3 feels heavy, especially on the days and ages when immigrants appear in the news around the world. The story begins…

McGill Queen’s University Press released in the Land of Lacandon: A graphic history of adventure and imperialism written by Richard Ivan Jobs and earlier this month by Stephen Van Wolptett. In the land of Lacandon, it follows Bernard de Cormont, a French ethnographic player and amateur filmmaker who challenged Chaepath in the mid-1930s, studied Lacandon people, and broadcast his way of life to the curious European masses. Considered a “lost tribe,” Lacandon was considered the closest living relative of the ancient Mayans. De Cormont’s adventures attracted much attention, but Lacandon was silent in his story. A century later, Richard Ivan…

More than ever, more than ever, Beat’s Bizarre Adventure gives three writers the opportunity to recommend some of their favourite books and series from Japan, Korea and elsewhere from other countries. This week we’re talking about birds, space samurai and of course suffering. knees Author/Artist: Joshua Barkman/False KneesPlatform: Webtoon, Gocomics, Official Site Boy, do I love birds? But what do you expect from someone whose username is literally Adorabirb? My pick this week is False Knees, a comedy webcomic by False Knees/Joshua Barkman. Each episode is rather short, and I want to convey a false knee of stories and jokes,…

Another universe’s purpose can be rough, and can be difficult to define, especially over the long term. It can lose its purpose along the way, drift and seem to drift. The original Ultimate Universe was released on the surface to bring in new and lapsed readers without decades of continuity luggage. As mentioned before in these dives, it is controversial that it exactly means in the execution. Regardless of its execution, as the line ages, it developed its own long-standing continuity. Unique potential barriers for new readers to jump in. That was a shorter time frame, and there were more…

In 2002, Hip Flask #1 introduced us to the world of the Elephantmen. Genetically engineered, indoctrinated human-animal hybrids built for war and “rehabilitated” to exist in a world that hates and fears them. Written and created by Richard Starkings (with initial assistance from Joe Casey) and gloriously rendered by José Ladrönn, Hip Flask was planned as a five-issue series, but the release timetable stretched a tad. Hip Flask #2 came out in 2003….#3 in 2005….#4 in 2012….and then nothing. At times, it seemed that the dramatic time-travelling story of hippo-hybrid Hip Flask might never see completion. And yet. In 2006, Starkings,…
