The Melancholy Hunter is a prequel to The Major, in which Major Groubert, trying to stop feeling sad, finds himself caught in the middle of a tragic plot against his life. Here is the full synopsis by Dark Horse: In this graphic novel prequel to The Major, Major Grubert from Mobius tries to get rid…
Miss Truesdale makes a bold return to the world of Hellboy in the sequel series, Rise of Man. Delving directly into the history of Hellboy’s world and how humanity came to be in that strange, magical, and often terrifying world, The Rise of Man offers us a glimpse of something incredible beyond comprehension. Franchise creator and comic book legend Mike Mignola teams up once again with the outstanding Jesse Lonergan to tell a remarkable story about one woman’s journey through time. You’ll be reading from the edge of your seat. We at The Beat reached out to Lonergan to learn…
This year has been a year of many manga bankruptcies. While Diamond is the largest company, October’s Chapter 7 filing for humanoids is also noteworthy, particularly in France. The original company, Les Humanoïdes Associés, is a very famous publisher, and some of the greatest names in French comics have been published there. The U.S. branch filed in the fall, while the French arm had already filed for receivership over the summer. The outline of Humanoid’s downfall seems pretty clear – the French publishing world as a whole has been in a precarious situation lately due to a number of factors,…
IDW Publishing has announced that Event Horizon: Inferno, the sequel to the 1997 sci-fi horror film, will be released this April. Christian Ward, who wrote the new prequel comic Dark Descent, returns, and artist Rob Carey (Alien: Resistance, The Outsiders) continues. The sequel is set 200 years in the future and follows a billionaire trying to retrieve the title spaceship’s interdimensional technology. Event Horizon: Inferno #1 Cover A, written by Christian Ward A synopsis provided to Collider reads: “In 2040, the spaceship Event Horizon disappears. Seven years later, it returns possessed by a demonic entity. After killing the rescuers, the…
Earlier this year, Skybound reunited Invncible co-creator/writer Robert Kirkman and contributing creator/artist Ryan Ottley to launch the new Battle Beast series. This is the first comic series set in the Invincible universe since the original book ended. Given the immense popularity of the Invincible animated series, it was no surprise that the comic spotlighted fan-favorite characters. After issue 6 was released last October, the series has been on hiatus to give the creators time to work on the second chapter. As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait, because Skybound has announced that Invincible Universe: Battle Beast…
Dynamite Entertainment, the comic book publisher behind hits like “The Boys,” just announced plans to help develop a tabletop role-playing game based on the beloved 80s animated series “Thundercats” (and now Dynamite Comics). The game launched today on Kickstarter and has already raised around $12,000. Dynamite announced in a press release that Lynvander Studios designed and wrote the campaign and setting book for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Lynnvander assembled TTG luminaries such as Tommy Gofton, Devin Wilson, Bryan CP Steele, Josh Derksen, and Adam Petkovic for the project, which follows previous collaborations with Dynamite including the recent Reanimator game.…
In October, DC and Marvel announced a new Superman/Spider-Man crossover to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Superman and Spider-Man’s first meeting. Today, DC announced details of the creators involved in Superman/Spider-Man #1, which ships in March, and the pairings that will appear in the one-shot backup story. The new Superman/Spider-Man #1 will retail for $7.99 and feature featured features by Mark Waid and Jorge Jimenez. When journalists Clark Kent and Peter Parker find themselves following the same story, the conspiracy they uncover could change the world – especially if Brainiac and Doctor Octopus have something to say about it. (And…
In December 10th’s “Top Comics to Buy This Week,” two of my favorite cartoonists in comics right now bring their idiosyncratic styles to single-issue comics. Two of them are Jesse Lonergan, who appears in the new issue of the Hellboy universe, and Stipan Morian, who appears in the new original series of Mad Cave. That alone would make for a good week, but it also got off to a very strong start with a new twist for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and a development for Ultimate Spider-Man that is determined to deliver a shocking finale. In short, I read a…
Magnetic Press has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Freaks’ Squeele, a seven-volume action-adventure series inspired by Florent Madoux’s comics. Today, The Beat is proud to share an exclusive preview of Volume 1. Squeal by Freaks is a series that debuted in France in 2008 with Ankama Edition and is highly acclaimed all over the world. Magnetic Press’s Kickstarter launch for the series marks its U.S. debut. The synopsis from the publisher is as follows. In Squealle the Freaks, the world is inhabited by demons, werewolves, gods, and mutants, many of whom are descendants of ancient mythical beings, and superheroes are…
Just over the weekend after Netflix announced it would acquire Warner Bros. for a total of approximately $72 billion, Paramount Skydance has steadfastly presented its shareholders with a much larger all-cash offer valued at $108.4 billion. The deal will be “backstopped” by the Ellison family and Redbird Capital, in addition to debt “fully assumed” by Bank of America, Citi and Apollo. Paramount Chairman and CEO David Ellison asserted, “We believe our proposal will create a stronger Hollywood, which is in the best interest of the creative community, consumers and the movie theater industry. We believe they will benefit from increased…
