SDCC Coverage sponsored by Mad Cave It’s super squelch! Hooray super skrull! The miniseries of Imperial, Jonathan Hickman, Ivan Coero and Federico Vicentini are one of the bright spots in Marvel’s never-ending event series. Following the various universe superheroes, Black Panthers and various Hulks, the mystery of those who want to destabilise galactic politics has long been the first to liven up this part of the Marvel universe. It is a space opera in a way that can be said that only Hickman has been added considerably by the art of his collaborators, Coero and Vicentini. Marvel obviously hits their…
SDCC COVERAGE SPONSORED BY MAD CAVE The use of comics in academic settings was quite simply unheard of up until quite recently. Resistance came from traditionalists and purists that didn’t consider comics to be up the standards of literature and culture (part of that dreaded high culture vs. low culture debate). Things have gotten better, though. There are postgraduate degrees on comics on offer and curriculums have embraced them more openly, if still a little guardedly. Now that comics are in the classroom, though, it falls to educators and learners to extend their reach, to broaden the…

The iconic Age Apocalypse storyline makes a massive comeback with the Apocalypse X-Men, a brand new issue six event released in September by Marvel Comics this fall. Legendary author Jeff Loeb, who helped create the original 1995 crossover, worked with Eisner-nominated artist Simone Di Me to rekindle the mutant dystopia that changed the X-Men forever. Is it even more exciting? X-Men fan favorite Joe Madureira returns to the franchise for the first time in decades, with her unique art style that helped define the look of the X-Books in the 90s. He draws variant covers in every issue of the…
The king of cartoons is officially immortal on the streets where his legend began. On July 9th, Marvel joined the Kirby family and unveiled “Jack Kirby Way” and “Yancy Street” on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The tribute celebrates not only Kirby’s towering legacy, but also his roots in New York City, the birthplace of many of his life and Marvel’s biggest works. At the heart of the event was a heartfelt nod to the Fantastic Four. For Marvel, this moment is a powerful reminder of Kirby’s visionary creativity and the city that helps shape it. As Marvel said: “The Fantastic…
SDCC Coverage sponsored by Mad Cave On a recent Saturday this summer, comic writer Mark Russell woke up early and headed through a busy convention center to a folding table stacked high in graphic novels. An indie book that invites Batman, Superman and billionaires to Kett. Russell sat behind their stacks and prepared to spend the day meeting new readers. However, Russell was not at San Diego Comic Con, the summer comic event that premiered. Russell wasn’t actually a comic show. He was at the American Library Association’s annual conference. And he was not alone. Dozens of other…
