Over 30 years later, Swat Kats is back. This time, a cult manga from the 90s is leaping from the sky to manga pages for the first time. The all-new series, Mega Cut City, has collapsed and will debut on Kickstarter in the fall of 2025. Joining the project is industry veteran Joseph P. Illidge, former Batman and milestone editor at DC Comics, bringing his sharp storytelling instincts to the cockpit as the editor of the series. The creative team is stacked: Frank J. Barbiere (Avengers, Robo, Five Ghosts) and Kevin Roditeri (Exile, Zoro of the Dead) are co-written. “Swat…
I need to start this review by saying that I am nowhere near Marvel’s #1 Spider-Man fans. I love Peter as a character and thoroughly enjoy reading stories focused on Spider-Man, Venom, Miles Morales, and even the Ghost Spider. That being said, I understand some of the complaints filed with the astonishing Spider-Man, but the deaths of eight Spider-Man (yes, with heavy filler and unnecessary adultery!) have found the story with a powerful message about maintaining hope in dark times and maintaining hope when everything seems lost. Written by Joe Kelly and Justina Ireland and one-shot by Derek Randy and…
West Coast Avengers is about to become a big book. It expects its own longevity. In other words, the first few issues gathered in the Gospels of Ultron are that they have set up many plot threads that hope for long-term germination in a satisfying conclusion. From the book’s central conceit – Tony Stark and James Rhodes can finally bring together a team of heroes that is rehabilitating supervillains, including the former Gate Ultron version, and plan according to the book’s needs, personal growth arcs laid out for Firestar, including PTSD. Amazing It is a high effort for an industry…
SDCC Coverage sponsored by Mad Cave Dynamite Entertainment has announced that it has acquired the rights to the comic book for Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. Although some other details have not been shared except that David Nakayama will provide covers for both series, Thompson, editor Nate Cosby and CEO Nick Barrucci still had a lot to say about the new era of Buffyverse and Dynamite. Teaser artwork by David Nakayama Thompson said, “In my early days I’ve become a writer and I’m trying to find out what stories are important to me and why. The heroine,…
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel are officially returning to comics in major ways thanks to Dynamite Entertainment and Disney’s 20th TV new partnership. This renewal is led by Eisner Award-winning Kelly Thompson, who has launched a bold new chapter for his beloved franchise and writes both the Interconnected Series. Known for her rave reviews under titles such as Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Bird of Prey, and Deadpool, Thompson brings Sunnydale and Los Angeles a signature mix of heart, humor and action. The Buffy and Angel comics act as a companion series, giving longtime fans a fresh twist while also…
SDCC Coverage sponsored by Mad Cave Through the Hollywood Reporter, IDW Publishing has announced that the main Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series will have a new creative team. The pair will take over from Jason Aaron and Juan Ferrelia, who renewed the series (along with a few other artists) during the 40th anniversary of Turtle last year. Little has been said about their running premise, but the reunion of the brothers will see them confront Ujigami, a new assassin who brings “personal danger” to the four heroes. TMNT #13 (2025), Cover A for Freddie E. Williams II In…
Unless you’ve been living under a rock on Krypton, you know that James Gunn‘s Superman movie is out in theaters, and the internet is abuzz with reactions from fans and foes alike. Comics Beat’s finest gathered in our own Justice Gang HQ here at Stately Beat Manor to discuss our thoughts on the movie, the characters and what’s next for the DCU. What were your general thoughts on Superman? DEANNA DESTITO: I loved it. It felt like a comic book movie. It wasn’t trying to be anything but a superhero film, with bright colors, action, maniacal villains, and everything else. It wasn’t trying…
If Spider-Man is not beaten to pulp once every six months, there should be a source of concern. Helgate had arrived in New York as of the last issue. This week’s issue is about knowing when Spider-Man should fight and when he will run away. It’s another quest for new memories from Peter’s youth, but Helgate continues to understand his points using his fist rather than words. Amazing Spider-Man #8 is a kind of test of how much damage Spider-Man and Hellgate can do without the need for a hospital. By the end of the question, it’s very clear that…
Lost Fantasy’s first arc appears in the dramatic closing in issue 4, and we’ll first look at what promises to be a game-changing finale. Henry and Neelas finally confront the killer they’ve been chasing, but the truth they reveal is far more devastating than what they imagined. With oversized action and emotional revelation, Lost Fantasy #4 is a must-see climax of the series’ opening chapter. And if you’re heading towards San Diego Comics Scam, there’s more to it: High Horse Comics is debuting a special black, white & blood edition of Lost Fantasy #1. But don’t expect to grab this…
