Reading weekly comics can feel like you’re running in a loop, and you can see the same story concept redoing over and over again in a slightly tweaked way, but the list of top comics to buy this week on August 6th is against that. Books like Ancestral Recall and Orla find themselves fresh and surprising. It feels like even the Hell, the new DC Comics series, Cheetah and Cheshire Rob Justice League, is trying to do something we’ve never seen before. Yeah, it’s become a surprising week for the new #1 and I dug it. As always, you can…
Archie vs. Minor Threat #1 announcement was unexpected. Archie and his Riverdale companions have met other characters, including Punisher, Predator, and most recently Jay and Silent Bob. The small threat didn’t seem that far away, but the problem is: How will the world of Riverdale and Midnight City collide? The answer lies in another classic Archie character, Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Sabrina wants to take her longtime boyfriend Harvey Kinkle to the Wizard’s Ball, but the only way humans are allowed is whether witches or wizards bring about ancient magical artifacts. To avoid losing, Sabrina searches for the five fingers…
Rick and Morty vs. The Universe, like any major comic book event, features multiple tie-ins that support the main story. The first of these tie-ins is Rick and Morty vs. Universe: #1 of Summer Love. This focuses on the summer trying to “go out” Rick by giving him the most epic bachelor party in the Parmesan universe. This is the story of Rick and Morty, so things go downhill quickly. The fun of reading Rick and Morty vs. The Universe: Summer of Love #1 is to see who answers the Summer Summons for the Bachelorette Party. It gives writers Daniel…
The Demi Human Crime Saga Grand Familia was featured on shelves by Titan Manga on September 30, 2025, and pre-orders are currently open. Set in a world where super-powerful beings like vampires, werewolves and other Demi-sans are hidden from human persecution, Grand Familia introduces a dark society at the edge of its collapse. The center features the legendary Grand Familia. This is a clan of vampires who rule the criminal underworld with their iron grips. However, when rival factions stimulated anxiety, a violent lawn war broke out, revealing that clan control was unsafe. The story continues with Leo, a young…
FML is a wonderful, surreal slice-of-life comedy from the award-winning team of Kelly Sue DeConnick (Bitch Planet) and David Lopez (Captain Marvel). Focused on the misadventures of a family and their friends in Portland, Oregon, it captures the electric and intense energy of how ridiculous, wonderful, and terrifying it is to be alive in the world right now. With stunning art that’s constantly re-inventing itself, and some of the strongest writing of DeConnick’s career, it’s an incredible comic and I would argue, essential reading for lovers of the medium. The Beat sat down with DeConnick to discuss some of the…
Over his long career, Hellboy has appeared in Strange and Wild Stories. He went to his toes with Grigori Rasputin himself. They teamed up with three Lucador brothers to fight monsters in Mexico. They even dealt with fallout from the Nazi Space Program. However, of the many journeys and adventures Hellboy has taken up, few have found it more attractive and persuasive than the Hellboy of Love. As may have been speculated in the title, Hellboy in Love sees the big man’s struggle with the biggest enemy of all (romance) in tracking his relationship with archaeologist Anastasia Bransfield between 1979…
Sophie begins planning revenge on the sorority who killed her friend Violet in a sister relationship. Hyde Street Story #2, Maytalschut writes that art by Leila Reis and Alex Sinclair. The series mixes several subgenre horror, especially thrasher movies with paranormal events, to create the complex main characters and stories you feel. The final issue of Violet’s Death was incredibly calm thanks to Leila Reis’ art. Her art recalls more detailed works like Bernie Wrightson in the 1970s and 1980s. Bernie Wrightson can render both beautiful and creepy in a glorious way. Her work fits perfectly into this horror story.…
Everything is approaching Coplan. For example, it is not a way to mean anything to my own personal improvement or to the continued happiness of humanity. I mean only in regards to the adaptation of my favorite 90s cartoons. After Mars and the Toxic Avenger/Crusade biker Mouse, Gold Rush follows along with the street sharks of writer Stephanie Williams and artist Ariel Medel (joined by colorist Valentine Na Pinto and letterer Jeff Eckleberry). Despite these solid series, my millennials mean that I’m always waiting for other shoes to fall. And my brain is not overjoyed/excited, but wondering if street sharks…
There’s a reason why I’ve been recalling my ancestors for so long. And no, that’s not because I like to read my writing. In an industry where stories are regularly set up on gimmicks, writer Jordan Clark and artist Atagun Ilhan have tried to make ancestral recalls a true melting pot of storytelling goodness. It can be a love story, celebration of black culture, a time/multiverse saga, an exploration of art and artistry, a response to the burgeoning threat of AI, and even a companion comedy. But with so many layers and so much going on, all the promises in…
The woman with Fifty Faces by Zackary J. Pinson and Jonathan Lackman is not a bad comic, but it’s a failed one. Its subject matter is fascinating, as film stars transformed models into over 50 of the most important artists of the early 20th century. The craft is particularly the grotesque call of illustrator Pinson and the grotesque call when Rani painted his presentations in several styles that were immortalized. However, for Pinson and Luckman to do well, their work is undermined by a combination of creative missteps and a lack of information about Rani’s life. A woman with 50…
