During the big iPhone 16 event, where the new Apple Watch and AirPods were also announced, the company sneakily unveiled a new MagSafe charging cable. While there’s nothing new for those still using older devices, the new magnetic accessory will improve charging speeds for iPhone 16 owners.
9to5Mac found that the new MagSafe charger supports charging speeds of up to 25W when paired with an iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro with a 30W (or higher) wall charger. The OG MagSafe charger only offers speeds up to 15W, which is the same maximum speed offered when using the new accessory with an iPhone 15 or earlier. So if you’re future-proofing an older device and already have the original MagSafe charger, there’s no reason to buy a new charger.
The new MagSafe accessory comes in two versions, one with a 1 meter (3.3 feet) cable and one with a 2 meter (6.6 feet) cable. The shorter cable costs $39 (same as the original) and the longer cable costs $49.
The new MagSafe chargers are available to order now from the Apple Store and will ship with standard delivery times, and the iPhone 16 series is available to pre-order for its launch date of September 20th.
