Apple’s announcement week starts on Monday

If you’re familiar with concepts like release schedules and calendars, you might notice that Apple hasn’t updated its computers in a while. It’s been almost a year since the iMac and MacBook Pro got faster, and Mac Pro and Mac Studio for just over a year. Now, Apple’s head of marketing Greg Jozwiak has announced an “exciting week of announcements” starting Monday.

It’s easy to imagine these models being pushed from the M3 variant to the M4. Given M4’s focus on AI, we can also expect a lot of attention to Apple Intelligence, which will be available to users at the same time as part of the iOS 18.1 update. The fact that each model is likely to be announced gradually over the course of the week, rather than in one big event, suggests we won’t see many other major changes.

Rumors suggest that only the Mac Mini will receive significant hardware revisions, with a much smaller chassis footprint. To be honest, I’m secretly hoping the Mac Mini isn’t the same size as the suggested Apple TV model. Especially when they have to shove thick power bricks at us to clutter the floor.

If we want to avoid Biblical climate change, we’ll need to curb emissions more aggressively.

Engadget’s Igor Bonifačić

Every time Samsung launches a flagship phone, it releases a Fan Edition that offers most of the same features in a slightly cheaper package. Engadget’s Igor Bonifacic tried out the new Galaxy S24 FE and, like its predecessor, found it a bit pointless. After all, at the time of sale you can buy an uncompromised version of the terminal for almost the same price.

It also includes a ban on giving AI control of nuclear weapons.

The White House has issued a memorandum outlining where AI should and should not be used in military and intelligence applications. This includes a ban on giving AI systems the ability to launch nuclear weapons, profile people, or grant asylum. Now we just need to make sure the AI doesn’t become smart enough to trick people into making decisions for us.
