After Tess Halliday’s twisted ex-husband steals from some bad guys, Tess is left without electricity in snowy Chicago with her teenage stepson Theo and 10-year-old twins Audrey and Liam. Then, life-changing news arrives at your doorstep. Tess’ biological father, whom she has never met, left her on a small coastal island called Demond off the coast of North Carolina. It includes a mansion and a trust, as well as guarantees that Tess and her family will be completely safe. Tess is grateful for the temporary refuge on a sunny shore, but the island has its own plans for Halliday, and those plans do not include sunbathing. After the mysterious death of Tess’s father, Philip, the sentient and controlling demons need a human trustee to deal with the irksome gods and squabbling legends that live there. Now that she’s here, Tess is bound to stay forever by blood… at least according to the island’s (literally) two-faced butler and local goddess of the dead. Caught between a sentient rock and a criminal trap, Tess and the children race to find Philip’s killer and understand their place on the magical island.
“This is my first full-length comic, but strangely, it’s also the most personal story I’ve ever written. When the world came to a standstill due to the coronavirus lockdown, Many of us, including myself, have had to rethink our place in the world: What does it really mean to me to have a job, to raise children, to have a purpose? So what do we do with our instinct to protect our children from big events that we can’t control?” Olson said.
“Those are tough questions, and the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to write about a character doing the same thing in a truly amazing place. I was able to connect with Sully, who is one of the best monster artists in this business. We are so grateful and honored that AHOY wanted to tell this story with us,” she continued.
Catrino continued, “Melissa has created a wonderful story with the Archaics, which resonated with me from the first time I read the pitch. Starting a new phase in life can be scary, and we can’t help but think about our past and our ancestors.” So is confronting the metaphorical monster of .
“Tess, Theo, Aubrey and Liam all embrace the adventure with a great combination of strength and curiosity. We can’t wait to join Tess and her family in exploring the world and delving into the mysteries of the island.” “I did,” Cantilino continued. “It was a really fun and rewarding experience working with Melissa as an artist to design the island and its inhabitants. Gab’s colors bring everything to life.”
