Amazon’s ‘God of War’ series hires Ronald D. Moore as showrunner

A few days ago, Deadline reported that several key players in Amazon’s upcoming live-action version of God of War have left the project. However, production on the series will continue, with the publication saying that Ronald D. Moore will serve as showrunner as well as one of the writers and executive producers. He replaces original showrunner Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) and EPs Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby (Children of Men and Iron Man). This is Moore’s first project with Sony TV since returning to the studio on a multi-year deal in June.

Moore is known for developing and producing the Battlestar Galactica reboot and writing dozens of episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. His writing credits also include several Star Trek films, Mission: Impossible II, and Amazon’s Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams. He worked with the studio for 10 years, developing shows such as Starz’s “Outlander” and Apple TV+’s “For All Mankind,” before retiring in 2020.

Judkins, Ferras, and Otsby had already written multiple scripts for the show, but Amazon reportedly wants to go in a different creative direction. Deadline previously reported that in addition to hiring new talent to lead production, Amazon is also considering creating a new writers’ room. Several EPs from Santa Monica Studios (the game’s developer) and PlayStation Production, who were involved from the beginning, are still involved in the project.

The God of War series is based on a 2018 game inspired by Norse mythology. The story focuses on Kratos, who goes on a journey with his son to scatter his late wife’s ashes from the highest peak. They battled gods, monsters, and other beings before reaching their destination, uncovering secrets about each other and the kingdom they inhabit along the way.
