Amazon will become the seventh member of Hollywood’s largest lobbying group. To be precise, Prime Video and Amazon-MGM Studios will join the Motion Picture Association on October 1, alongside six other big names: Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Universal Studios, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Netflix (which became a member in 2019).
Amazon was already involved with the MPA, having served as a board member of the anti-piracy coalition Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment since 2017. MGM (which Amazon will acquire in 2022) was a member of the MPA from 1998 until 2005.
“MPA is the global voice of a growing and evolving industry, and welcoming Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios to our membership will expand our collaborative policymaking and content protection efforts on behalf of the most innovative and creative companies,” MPA Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin said in a statement. “MPA Studios invigorate local economies, create jobs, enrich cultures, and strengthen communities wherever they work. With Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios joining our incredible membership, MPA will be able to give an even greater voice to the world’s best storytellers.”
Amazon’s membership in the MPA demonstrates the company’s strong presence in the entertainment industry, and the fact that both Amazon and Netflix are members highlights the massive influence streaming has across the industry.
