Albaze Publishing and Alien Books fires editors

The impact of Diamond’s bankruptcy continues to ripple through the comic industry as two more publishers distributed by Diamond are laying off.

Kevin Ketner, editor of Ablaze Publishing, was posted today.

Ketner previously joined Dynamite Comics, but has edited many titles, including Deald Dead and The Mighty Barbarians for Ablaze. Ablaze announced it was exclusively updated in Diamond in 2023, but in recent months it has been a crowdfunding book, like many publishers.

Lysa Hawkins has long been associated with Valiant Comics and is now editor of the Brave Line of Alien Books, which has been posted on Valiant Fan Group:

It was my honor and privilege to be a brave universe defender for these six or more years. I want aliens and bravery. Thank you for being the most amazing fan.

Hawkins moved to Alien in 2018 when he took over Valiant as a licensed publisher. She was promoted to editor last year. She previously was with both Marvel and DC as an editor. The alien book continues under the supervision of Mattias Timarki, who founded the line several years ago as an American arm of his longtime South American publishing business. In addition to Valiant, Alien also publishes manga. In addition, future foreign licenses such as I and Dragon Collection have also started.

Smaller publishers with no other distribution options have long been predicted to be most affected by the diamond situation. It was an overall cruel week for the manga. There were layoffs on both the dark horse and the IDW.

Unfortunately, this could only be the beginning of more publishers’ cuts. When things start to accumulate again (as they inevitably do), there will be some good editors out there to be hired.
