It’s taken a decade, but we finally have a teaser for the live-action A Minecraft Movie. It debuted in a minute-plus video released by Warner Bros. today, and boy, is it good. The film studio confirmed that it’s moving forward with its previous target of April 4, 2025 for a theatrical release only. Sure, it was previously scheduled for a May 2019 and March 2022 release, but the existence of the teaser makes us feel a bit more hopeful (gullible?) this time around.
Filmmaker Jared Hess is directing the project, which has seen a flurry of directors come and go. The Nacho Libre director teams up with former lead actor Jack Black to play Minecraft’s Steve. The cast also includes Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge. Check out the teaser for your first look at a world where, as Black puts it, “if you can dream it, you can do it.” It seems a lot of people are dreaming of cartoony animals. Eerily realistic teethHave we learned nothing from Sonic?
For the uninitiated, Minecraft is literally the best-selling video game of all time, with over 350 million copies sold. Originally released by independent developer Mojang Studios, Microsoft acquired the studio and the game’s intellectual property in 2014 for a staggering $2.5 billion. Minecraft is an open-world sandbox with no clear goals, allowing players to build anything they can imagine. Of course, there are also a number of spin-off games that focus more on gameplay. As for the movie, it’s been in development for a long time. It was first announced in 2014, the same year Mojang was acquired by Microsoft.
