DC Comics’ summer event concludes this week with Absolute Power #4. With the Brainiac Queen defeated by the heroes, Amanda Waller’s Trinity of Evil is weakened, especially as the imprisoned heroes are freed. In an action-packed epic finale, our heroes take on Waller and have some surprises in store.
Absolute Power #4 starts out quiet, but packed with wall-to-wall action. The key to this problem is Green Arrow, who has been helping Waller from the beginning. Screenwriter Mark Waid brings us scenes between Waller and Green Arrow, which makes it pretty easy to pick this up and understand what’s going on. The heroes break out of prison and fight right in front of Waller.
From there, it’s all action, with artist Dan Mora and color artist Alejandro Sanchez packing tons of heroes into every panel. They face off against soldiers with powerful weapons, but with most of the heroes’ powers gone, it’s a bit of a suicide mission.

Meanwhile, the Flash faces off against Waller’s backup plan: a multiverse hero from another dimension! There are multiple elements at play here, including Amazon, who joins the fight a little later. Overall, it’s pretty easy to keep track of what’s going on, even if some of the action scenes are downright chaotic. Mora uses motion blur in places to catch the eye, but it’s not easy to get a sense of the battlefield layout.
That being said, if you’re wondering how the heroes get their powers back, it’s pretty well drawn. In fact, it may be too easy in some respects, after all, this is a short event. Mora offers all the heroes getting their mojo back in a great double-page layout with minimal dialogue, and it’s a sight to behold.
Of course, this issue works well to solve Waller’s problems, as Waller’s reign needs to be subdued and reset. This is a superhero comic, after all. The ideas in these last few pages are good, but the exposition-heavy content leaves me a little disappointed. The last few pages are less exciting, as they’re packed with visuals as the characters face each other and converse, setting the stage for DC’s “all-in” initiative.
Absolute Power #4 is a great finale that wraps up the important elements and establishes a new direction for our heroes and villains. It all makes sense together and doesn’t feel like it’s made up or fabricated on the spot. However, it’s difficult to convey these revelations clearly and sometimes in an interesting visual way. A lot of the descriptions make me wonder if this series could have been better with five issues to let the scenes breathe and get more visually interesting moments, but before DC’s “All In” initiative, As the final issue, this series has a lot going for it.
“Absolute Power” #4 packs a lot of stories and reveals them

Do a lot of work to keep Waller together and set up DC’s “all in”
The chaotic action is a little confusing but exciting.
Green Arrow and Dreamer fans will be very satisfied
suffers from some severe exposure drops
The last few pages are interesting but mostly explanatory
