A book depicting the complicated history of DC movies is finally here

Yesterday, I received some news that made my heart happy at a time when we are in desperate need of joy.

Finally, someone is writing a book about the history of the DC movie franchise. That person is Tatiana Siegel, executive editor of Variety magazine.

The news was followed by a Variety article praising Mr. Siegel’s deal on staff, along with details from publisher Crown, editor Aubrey Martinson, and agent John Michael Darga of Aevitas Creative Management, among others. It was reported in The blurb is bland:

From George Reeves to David Corenswet, this book provides a complete behind-the-scenes look at one of the most storied, dramatic and successful superhero franchises in Hollywood history.

But as a longtime observer of DC film stories…oh wow. Possibility. Individuality. Confused.

I’ve long enjoyed Siegel’s in-depth coverage of Hollywood’s superhero era, so she seems uniquely qualified to delve into this subject. Yes, yes, there are triumphs like Richard Donner’s Superman and Christopher Nolan’s Batman. But there are so many strange alleys, dramatic reversals, and behind-the-scenes power plays.

Some possible topics:

Some of these are probably TV projects that have nothing to do with the origins of this book, but what a long, wild story it is…probably more than one person can cover.

The MCU has had a great history with Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzalez, and Gavin Edwards’ MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios. This is probably the best book about the comic industry, or film industry, in recent years. (I’ll have to write down the notes I read someday.) And it took three people.

Even though I’ve covered it from afar myself, the amazing twists and harrowing twists and turns of DC film history are a story filled with so many heroes and villains, some of whom are largely unknown to the public. Suffice it to say, it also includes.

In other words, “Tatiana, I know you have the perfect source, but please get my email if you need it.”
