In a science fiction world where satire, dark humor and bold ideas intersect, stories from erotic techniques stand out as collections that don’t stand out boundaries. The anthology weaves eight original stories from ten top indie creators, providing a mix of dystopian tech nightmares, bizarre relationship counseling and everything in between. Although it contains NSFW content, Erotech has managed to blend provocative with profound things in ways that make them impossible to overlook. From underground comics to surrealists, this collection explores the troublesome human emotions intertwined with the interaction of technology and desire. It’s not just sex and robots. It’s about the raw, unfiltered humanity that drives both.
Beat reached out to Dean Haspiel to discuss the project further, finding out why this comic has made it so important, especially since it has been left in the campaign for two days now.
Diego Higuera: Tales from Erotech is a globally built anthology introduced with technical support. Regarding this setting, what made you want to expand into a larger universe with multiple creators?
Dean Haspiel: The Short Film, Technical Support, is based on Sex-6000, a 12-page one-shot comic set in the world of Erotech. Geoffrey and I had so much fun creating it and thought there was so much potential in the sex robot story. Erotec is an office comedy about how our relationships and dependence depend on how technology relies on our sexual desires, and it is a very powerful part of what it means to be human. We thought it was great for talented indie creators to riff on the same idea. The only rule was that we needed a sex robot and had to be human. Beyond that, creators can do anything – any genre, any style, etc.
Higuera: Anthology blends humor, technology and erotica. How do you think this mix resonates with modern audiences? And why do you think there is a growing desire for humorous erotic comics?
Haspiel: I love mixing genres. I think most people have something to do with fighting technology and dealing with bad bosses and office politics. The trick of erotica was to keep it personal, original and entertaining. Each creator finds a balance of their own genres, and many tend to be more towards fear than humor. I think modern audiences enjoy the story from a variety of perspectives. Rather than being dismissed as illegal or shameful, erotica these days are considered a legal literary genre, opening up many possibilities for creators.
Higuera: Dean Haspiel’s story draws inspiration from OMAC #1 and the vision of artificial dating. Have you had other major influences, such as comics, sci-fi, or real-world technology that shaped the themes of Erotech’s story?
Haspiel: The original script came from my experience as a software engineer. I began to think about what it would be like to build a sex robot that actually works. What is it like having sex with a robot? This was the starting point for all creators to develop their own stories and themes. Artistic influences actually carry out the gamut, from mid-century illustrations to classic Bronze Age comics to surreal underground comics. That’s what makes this book a great read. Each story is truly unique as there are so many different influences on the table.
Higuera: With such a wide range of creators involved, from Chloe Brailsford to Alan Flops to Dean Haspiel, how did you build your lineup? Were there any particular voices or perspectives you wanted to express for sure?
Haspiel: First and foremost, we wanted to introduce the artists we loved and felt that this material really has a vibe. Beyond that, we wanted to include creators who express different perspectives on gender, gender and technology. The ultimate goal is to make this a recurring series. That way you can give more creators a platform.
Higuera: The campaign is launched on Kickstarter. This has become a major platform for indie comics. How did crowdfunding change how projects like stories from Erotech come to life, and how did they respond to previous supporters?
Haspiel: Crowdfunding has made projects like Erotech (genre bending, NSFW) possible. Getting such a project from the ground is not easy. There were three successful campaigns from Erotech. This allowed us to continue developing our materials and remain true to our original vision. Supporters of these campaigns are truly mini investors and will help bring back stories that would otherwise not have been created.
Higuera: Tales from Erotech explores a wide range of themes, from dark, prophetic science fiction to playful satire. Were there any particular tone or message you wanted to bring all these different stories together?
Haspiel: I think what brings these stories together is that each one represents the creator’s personal vision. Each story is shaped by its creator’s unique perspective, artistic style and creative passion. I hope this will make the story from erotic tech into a great comic anthology.
Higuera: The final word for fans and readers!
Haspiel: Whether you’re planning on backing your project, see Project Page and Project Updates. We have created profiles of all artists with links to personal pages and social media accounts. I hope you find another artist you love and want to follow.
