Android 15 arrives a month later than expected

We’re used to hearing about new Android versions at Google Pixel smartphone launch events, but the source code for Android 15 has finally been made public on the Android Open Source Project. It was somehow missing from last month’s Google Pixel launch event, but better late than never. Check out the public link from the developer here.

Android 15 will be available on select Pixel models soon. Select devices from Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi will be supported in the coming months. Some interesting features include smart volume adjustment and dynamic range compression for apps that use AAC audio content with volume metadata. In addition to improvements to split-screen app access, there is also edge-to-edge app viewing if your app targets SDK 35.

The developers have also started a series called “Spotlight Weeks” where they explore Android-related technical topics, starting with the new features in Android 15.

Since Android 10, Google has stopped naming its latest releases after desserts. Android 9 Pie ends this tradition, with Google focusing on more traditional branding and regular feature releases. While this may be a sign of a mature OS, some are nostalgic for the days of excitement and anticipation. Will it take us back?
