boom! The studio announced that it has acquired the comic book rights to the 1985-88 animated TV series “Jems and the Holograms,” owned by Hasbro. In addition to releasing a new series in 2026, the publisher plans to reprint previous comics, with the first volume available for pre-order via Kickstarter in November.
“I was part of the team that brought Jem and the Holograms back to comics in 2015, and I’m a big fan of our strategy,” said Michael Kelly, former vice president of global publishing for BOOM! publisher Hasbro and former vice president of global publishing for Studios and Hasbro. I have seen with my own eyes the positive impact she has had on a wide and diverse community of readers, and I couldn’t be happier to be working with Jerrika, Kimber, Stormer, and the rest of the group (yes, even Pizzazz).
Created by Christy Marx for Hasbro, Marvel, and Sunbow Productions (home of other ’80s cartoons based on Hasbro’s toy lines, such as G.I. Joe and Transformers), Jem and the Holograms revolved around Jerrica Benton, a music manager who lives a secret double life as rock star Jem, an alter ego created by a holographic computer built by her late father. Along with her band, she fought to protect a rival band from discovering the technology behind their secrets and protect foster children in their care.
The first comic series was created by Kelly Thompson and Sophie Campbell and debuted in 2015 when IDW Publishing held the licenses for GI Joe, Transformers, and other Hasbro properties. Thompson’s series, which ended in 2017, and artwork by many more artists (including Jen Bartel, Meredith McClaren, and Savannah Ganucheau) will be included in full in BOOM!’s first hardcover, Jem and the Holograms: Truly Outrageous Comic Collection. The announcement coincides with the show’s 40th anniversary and the release of a new doll series by Royal Subjects, as well as an EP by Jem’s singing voice, Britta Phillips.
