Grab your hat because NYCC is about to kick off. As the show gets bigger and bigger about branding, my inbox is flooded with pop-ups, demos, and invitations to walkthroughs. There isn’t enough time to sample them all. But a few notes before we get into the whirlpool:
§This show starts with Retailer Day for professionals, press and retailers. There are 20 different 5-minute presentations from publishers and other entities. I’ll try to tweet some of it, but my heart might just crumble. I understand. So much to talk about!
§Elsewhere, Marvel hits the streets with superhero scoops. Or what we used to call an ice cream truck. Instead of a tinkering theme beloved by kids of all ages, this track is filled with “iconic Marvel anthems reimagined into classic ice cream truck jingles.” Probably The Avengers, but I’d prefer an Ant-Man or Black Widow theme.
“You can choose from “character-inspired Frozen pieces, collectibles, and memorable moments” that will surprise, delight, and celebrate Marvel’s rich legacy in New York City. Brands include Edy’s® ice cream, Nestlé® and Häagen-Dazs®. Hmm, ice cream.
Trucks will hit several boroughs starting today in what is now Queens. The first 500 fans at each location will receive a mix of giveaways and Marvel Collectibles. They will be tested on trivia so you have to win that ice cream.

I won’t be sampling Marvel ice cream today, but I’ll be scarfing gelato with spirits later.
§Another invitation has arrived from Sanrio. We offer what can only be called a “preview night” view of My Melody & Kuromi’s Game Plaza.
NYCC doesn’t have Wednesday preview nights…yet. When I interviewed showrunner Christina Rogers a few weeks ago, I asked her about this and she said, “We’ll see… It’s no surprise that NYCC preview night is coming. San Diego went 6-9 on Wednesday night, and it’s easy to imagine a similar time frame for NYCC in the near future. The problem, of course, is getting the booth ready in time, but… it’s coming.
About the Sanrio pop-up:
This is a must-see stop for Sanrio fans attending NYCC and marks the US debut of My Melody & Kuromi Game Plaza after a successful launch in Tokyo this summer.
Attendees can look forward to exclusive digital games inspired by the iconic duo, as well as super high-end photo opportunities, limited edition merchandise and special giveaways. The pop-up will also feature memorable meet-and-greet moments with Melody and Kuromi from Thursday through Sunday, 12-3 p.m.
Ice cream and my melody. NYCC is off to a great start.
