The nine nominees for the Sophie Castill Award for this year’s translation comic – English has just been announced. The winners will be announced at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, which will be held from September 26th to 28th, 2025. This is the third year of the Sophie Castille Award and is the award for the best translation of non-English graphic novels. Publishers around the world were invited to submit to consider graphic novels for consideration, in which the translation of their works is translated into English.
“We are thrilled to work with our partners, VIP Brands, Ltd. and Comica in our presentations for these important awards,” commented LICAF Director Julie Tait. “Translation is a subtle and complicated aspect of bringing international work to English and new audiences. Skills are highly underrated and certainly not mechanical work.”
The ju judge is made up of three judges. Alex Fitch is the UK’s only monthly radio show on comics from the Arts Council Radio station in London. He is an award-winning graduate comic scholar with extensive publications on topics in film and graphic novels, as well as lectures on the history of animation at the University of Brighton.
Dr. Harriet Air Earl is a senior lecturer in English at Sheffield Hallam University and a researcher at the Centre for War and Atrocities at Nipishing University in Canada. She is the author of Zauamia’s Silence: The Vietnam War of American Manga and the Comics: An Introduction.
Gabi Putnoki is the driving force behind the graphic novel reading room, an initiative of the manga community that spreads love for reading graphic novels and brings new readers to shape.

About the Sophie Castill Award for Comics in Translation:
“These awards are to honor translators who are often the nameless heroes of comics in translation. The difference between good and bad translations is the difference between comic success in translation. This award is the translator and all the nameless heroes of the comic industry.
They were created in honor of Sophie Castill, co-founder and director of Mediatoon and European Comics, who passed away unexpectedly in 2022. She was a constant source of creativity, motivated publishers around the world and encouraged them to exchange ideas. She has become an important figure in the growth of manga and graphic novel translations around the world.
Considered the ninth art in France, comics and graphic novels are becoming more popular every year and are a diverse, dynamic international medium loved around the world. Spreading these works internationally through translation is a way to connect the world. ”
