I love Marvel’s rivals. It was a fun gaming experience, especially when teaming up with friends. But the biggest part of the game was how to introduce new fans and long-time friends to the world of Marvel comics. Now, Marvel Rivals: Ignite #1 offers real comics for players to pick up. Better yet, it is based on the latest set of in-game skins.
Skin is based on artwork from Peach Mococo, who has become one of the best writers/artists in the business. Momoko also contributes to the anthology of “ko-sute-iwa.” This takes place in the Devil’s Day-to-Day Universe, featuring X-men’s Psylocke (named “Sai”) as a demon hunter. “ko-sute-iwa” pits the demonic version of venom and the ritual, all of which are rendered beautifully in black and white by Momoko. Momoko also offers some horrifying images, including the devil’s take that has plagued readers ever since closing the book. She joined the Demon Days team, including Zack Davisson (acting as a translator) and Ariana Maher, who plays black and white in terms of lettering.
Momoko is also the reason why Marvel Rivals: Ignite #1 exists. She designed a set of skins for the game, giving Peni Parker’s Armor a demonic upgrade, and giving Punisher a massive Samurai armor. They look really cool and I love that other stories take advantage of these designs. I also like Ignite tackles the mechanics of the game by splitting the three stories into a series of Marvel characters facing each other.
Amazing
Remove the “Tsuchigomo”. This can be best described as a twisted game of tags. Yuji Kaku brings the same creepy images that fueled his cartoon hellish paradise. It actually moves like a spider, running around, then removes a series of cannons that fire webbing. However, he also writes the story with a heart as Punisher refuses to kill a child and refuses to turn on the people who hired him to kill a penis when he finds out that she is a child. It ends with a hilarious note, and I don’t mind seeing more of this take.
The final story of Luna Snow pitting against Hela, “Sounds of Victory,” did not click with me like the other two did. Maybe I’ve never entered Luna Snow as a character or it felt like it wasn’t like a real story, but rather a way to explain the mechanics of Marvel rivals to non-players (from the game to the actual moves). But it had all the ingredients for success: Sato Kami was a great writer and offered great anime like Promare and Star Wars: Visions’ “The Duel.”
Marvel Rivals: Ignite #1 is a fun collection of comic-themed stories that appeal to Marvel Rivals Players, but mostly serve as a showcase for Peach Momoko’s designs. I think this one shot only heightened my desire for ongoing Marvel rival comics. There are a lot of possibilities out there!

A wonderful return to the world of the Devil Age courtesy of Peach Mokoko.
Momoko designs a new look for certain characters that look really cool.
The story of a penis parka and the Punisher begs to expand into a complete problem.
Luna’s Snow Story didn’t click with me.
