The militaristic and all-conquering Grunod has lost one of their most dangerous slaves, Kaisax. And he seems to have discovered the key to infinite power and the means to free the various races that Grunod has continued to conquer in order to continue building his endless empire. However, Kaisax’s sense of morality and decency remain on a more personal level than the cosmic powers he possesses, and he struggles to do the right thing, not only with his own new nature, but with other extraordinary brings them into conflict with powerful and cosmically powerful beings.
This second issue of Genecy, written by Gerald Cooper, continues the huge spectacle seen in the first issue. You can practically feel the vast cosmic energy radiating from each page. In fact, the power and sense of scale of the artwork by a team of extremely talented artists (the changes in style between each artist can be a little jarring in places) can be a bit too overwhelming at times. The stylized text by Aaron Mead can be a bit difficult to read.
Walt Barna’s eye-popping coloring is undoubtedly a big part of Genesee’s striking visuals, with the bold palette feeling truly alien and almost radioactive at times.
Despite the fairly relentless action, there are some moments that are a bit more expository, both in the main story and in some backup strips. Some of the foreign terms used in the story are clearly explained and provided with context in the afterword.
In my review of Genecy #1, I described it as a visual feast, and that definitely applies to this second issue as well. The good thing about issue 2 is that while it was a little lacking in the first part, it at least strikes a balance, if not exactly matching the level of style (and let’s be honest, what could match that?). It’s that there’s more content to fix. Read more satisfying and visually beautiful books.
Genecy #2 is available for purchase from Indy Planet. Thanks to Gerald Cooper for providing a digital copy of his comic for review.
