Strange things are happening in Edwardian Whitechapel as brother and sister detectives Bernard and Felicity Hiltson investigate a mysterious death in an old soldier’s home. What on earth killed him, and what’s lurking in the attic?

Chris Denton wastes no time in establishing a brilliantly effective atmosphere for this macabre tale of murders in early 20th century London. His script does a great job of introducing the characters and their setting with a minimum of clever exposition. David Hitchcock proves to be the perfect man to bring Denton’s writing to life with wonderfully evocative gothic black and white images.

The sense of time and place is great, and the story switches gears from murder mystery to essentially Edwardian survival horror at a great pace. Nevertheless, there’s room for a lovable, well-drawn supporting cast, and as the story races toward its climax, there’s not just one truly heart-pounding shock, but several plot twists.

Since the story and its horrifying events incorporate plenty of world-building details (which I won’t spoil, people with very specific and common phobias probably won’t enjoy it at all), I think White I sincerely hope that the chapel cordon lays out this story. The basis for further stories featuring characters and their exploits.

Whitechapel Cordon will soon be crowdfunding via Kickstarter. You can register here to receive launch notifications. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s the perfect period drama. It’s almost a must-read for fans of horror comics, especially now that the darkness of this season is beginning to consume us.

Thanks to Chris Denton for providing a digital copy of The Whitechapel Cordon for review.
