Rob Williams, Patrick Goddard and original series artist Steve Yowell return to Zenith’s world by giving Wales’ superhero Red Dragon a brand new spinoff spotlight. The Red Dragon series will launch in 2000 with the AD Prog 2451, which will be released in the UK and online on September 24th. October 29th with the US Program Pack.
Zenith is Grant Morrison’s best remembered contribution to AD in 2000, and is one of the few examples where superhero stories have proven the success of the weekly science fiction anthology in the UK. Co-created by Grant Morrison and Steve Yowell, it debuted on the Prog 536 in August 1987, running in four series, running in the second half of 2000.
Red Dragon was featured as Wales’ biggest superhero in the original (phase 1) 1987 Zenith series, but it didn’t live any more. Transparency, whose private name was Siadwell Leased, was a man who gained fame solely because of disillusionment when it was adopted by Zenith in the 1960s. The new series, written by Rob Williams, promises to showcase the Welsh champions in a dual timeline story. Today’s Patrick Goddard and Steve Yowell (with Dylan Teague coloring support) introduce Steve Yowell (with Dylan Teague coloring support) who covers the 1960s.
According to a press release from The Rebellion, the story itself features a current post-Brexit Wales documentary crew exploring the “legacy left behind by the greatest hero” scattered with vibrant flashback sequences.
Speaking about the impulses of this new series, Rob Williams said:
“The arc of the Red Dragon story in Zenith in 1987 broke my heart. I wasn’t alone in it. Grant and Steve created this vibrant, deeply flawed, highly human character. He was a Welsh superhero. The Red Dragons rang out, and grew up over the years, but there were aronics and aronics.
He added:
“When asked if he was interested in telling the story of the Red Dragon, I began to think about the idea of a Welsh superhero: showing some of the optimism and bright colors of the Red Dragon in the 1960s, and telling a story about where Wales and England are now.”
Red Dragon is a van Farweit who is not only loved by Rob Williams, but is still present for British con artist co-creator Steve Yowell, who calls him “one of the mainstays of my sketch repertoire.”
Yeowell says:
“My first encounter with him was when he appeared in Zenith Phase 1 over 30 years ago, a broken, disillusioned figure doomed for a tragic end.
In support of the new series, Rob Williams and Patrick Goddard will sign on September 27th at the Forbidden Planet Store in Cardiff, the capital of Wales’s Cardiff.
